Ismael Hernandez is an ex-Marxist Leninist from Puerto Rico. His father was founding member of the Socialist Party in the island and eventually Ismael joined the party with him. “America is the enemy of humanity” was one of his father’s slogans. Ismael’s mother, however, sneaked him to go to mass and fostered the development of a double consciousness in him. He later joined Jesuit Seminary trying to make sense of these competing visions of the world. After leaving seminary due to his inability to be sent to Sandinista Nicaragua, Ismael came to America. Here he eventually renounced to Marxism and worked as executive director of a Catholic ministry in the inner city for the Diocese of Venice. Ismael founded the Freedom & Virtue Institute in 2008 to bring the ideas of individual liberty, limited government, self-reliance and love for the poor to communities of color. He lectures with Acton Institute and lives in Fort Myers with his wife and three children. Ismael holds a Masters Degree in Political Sciences and has lectured with the Foundation for Economic Education, the American Enterprise Institute and the Acton Institute.

Kitty Werthmann was born in Austria, lived under Adolf Hitler’s regime for seven years. Dictatorship did not happen overnight. It was a gradual process starting with national identification cards, which had to be carried at all times. Once the Nazis (National Socialist Party) took control, the people no longer voted for government positions; all positions down to the local level were filled by appointment. Hitler nationalized Austria, socialized the banks, health care, automobile production, education and more. Children were told to listen only to Hitler and not their parents. Kitty said they had prayer in school and religious instruction, but once the Nazis took over this stopped overnight. Instead of praying, they started singing praise songs about the state. Children were instructed to report to state education on Sunday morning instead of attending Church. The government created state-run child care and began molding the minds of children at a very young age. Welfare became a huge apparatus with everyone accessing subsidized housing, food stamps, heating subsidies and many other benefits until everyone, regardless of salary, reached the prescribed standard of living. Kitty will illustrate the parallels between the step by step loss of freedom in Austria and developments that have been in motion in the United States for years.

Having been heavily involved as a volunteer in local politics in Smyrna, as well as following his recent bid for Cobb County GOP Chair, it is Oleg’s belief that the most critical issue facing the United States is the steady spread of collectivism. As Oleg says, “I am involved because I do not want my 3 children to experience socialism… because I have.”

Restoring Our Promise
Restoring Our Promise is a conference comprised of many voices. They are all coming from different points of view and from different subject matter, and yet there is a common theme. There are forces at work in our country that seek to undermine our freedoms. Has this ever happened to countries before us? What does Socialism look like from a practical point of view? How does it effect the lives of those who live it day to day? We have testimony of those that have lived it.
If other countries have seen healthcare, education, the media, redistribution of wealth, etc used as propaganda tools, could that happen to us? What could we do to protect ourselves from our system being used in a way that could undermine our way of life? All the speakers have a perspective that can enlighten us and help us to be informed.
Those who desire to give up freedom to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.
